OpenAI has unveiled its latest AI innovation, the ChatGPT Agent, which can plan, reason, and perform multi-step tasks across the web and apps using integrated tools.
According to OpenAI, the ChatGPT Agent utilizes a sandboxed virtual machine to complete tasks safely, switching between tools such as a web browser, Python code interpreter, terminal, and file system. It builds on ChatGPT’s existing tools by allowing the AI to think, decide, and act independently.
This allows the AI agent to handle complex, multi-step tasks by using its virtual computer—and it can do tasks such as browsing and interacting with websites, run code, analyze data, access APIs and apps, integrate tools, access services (like Gmail, Google Calendar, Notion, and GitHub to automate tasks), generate multi-step reports, edit files, use the terminal, and automate tasks.
The company stated that it not only responds to prompts but can also break down complex instructions, plan the necessary steps, execute each part autonomously, and notify users when finished.
OpenAI also emphasized the safety integrated into every aspect of the agent’s operation. Users will be asked for permission for all irreversible actions, such as submitting forms, making purchases, or sending an email. Direct access to passwords, banking info, or sensitive credentials is prevented. Users can also actively monitor its actions through a Watch Mode feature for sensitive tasks.
Despite its advanced capabilities, the ChatGPT Agent still has its current limitations, including basic slide decks, spreadsheet data inconsistency, tool switching lags, incorrect decision making, and limited full automation.
OpenAI will gradually roll out the ChatGPT Agent. It is now available for ChatGPT Pro subscribers, while ChatGPT Plus and Team users will be able to use it starting July 21, 2025.
