OpenAI Teams Up with Ex-Apple Designer for AI iPhone

Jony Ive, the former lead designer at Apple, is reportedly in discussions with OpenAI to collaborate on an ambitious project dubbed the “iPhone of Artificial Intelligence” according to a report by the Financial Times.

Jony Ive, renowned for his role as Apple’s Chief Design Officer from 1997 to 2019, played a pivotal part in shaping the design of iconic Apple products such as the iPhone and MacBook.

Three unnamed sources have revealed that OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, is exploring a partnership with Ive’s company, LoveFrom, to create what could potentially become OpenAI’s first consumer-oriented device. The project is expected to receive substantial backing, with a $1 billion investment from Japanese conglomerate Softbank, with its chip design firm, Arm, playing a crucial role.

While the discussions surrounding this endeavor are said to be quite serious, the process of narrowing down the specifics of the product is still in its early stages, with numerous concepts on the table. It may still take several months for the venture to be formally agreed upon, and any resulting product would likely require several years to reach the market.

This prospective collaboration between Jony Ive, OpenAI, and Softbank’s significant investment reflects a bold step toward developing cutting-edge AI technology with the potential to reshape consumer electronics in the future.
