OpenAI has begun piloting group chats in select regions, allowing people to collaborate with each other and with ChatGPT in a shared conversation.
With the new group chats, this feature let multiple users join the same thread to plan events, make decisions, or work on projects together.
ChatGPT can participate by helping compare options, summarize information, or generate ideas.
When does ChatGPT enter? Well, the assistant only responds when it’s helpful or when users mention it directly.
Creating a group chat can be done from any new or existing conversation.
Adding someone to an existing chat generates a separate copy, so the original remains private.
Users can invite up to twenty people through a shareable link and will be asked to set up a short profile so participants can identify one another. A new sidebar section keeps these group chats organized.
All major features, including search, image and file uploads, and image generation, are supported.
Also, responses come from GPT-5.1 Auto, which selects the best model available based on each participant’s plan. Rate limits apply only to ChatGPT’s responses, not to messages between users.

OpenAI says group chats are designed with privacy in mind. They do not use or update personal ChatGPT memory, and participation is optional.
Users can manage settings such as naming the group, adding or removing members, or muting notifications.
Additional safeguards automatically reduce sensitive content if anyone in the group is under 18.
The ChatGPT Group Chats feature is now rolling out on mobile and web for logged-in users on the Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan.
OpenAI describes this as an early test and plans to expand availability and refine the experience based on user feedback.
