HUAWEI Mate 80 Pro Review

HUAWEI Mate 80 Pro

In case you missed it, HUAWEI has just launched its newest flagship device in the Philippines, the HUAWEI Mate 80 Pro, and just as our title suggests, we’re reviewing it.

We spent some time with the HUAWEI Mate 80 Pro as our daily driver to see how it performs in real-world use.

In this article, we’ll go through its design, display, camera, performance, and battery to help you understand what it offers.

Design and Build

The review unit we received comes in a Gold color variant, which gives a premium and eye-catching appearance.

The finish reflects light nicely but without being too flashy.

In terms of build, the phone feels sturdy and well-constructed. The materials used add to its premium fee. However, one thing to note is its weight. At 219 grams, it is on the heavier side compared to many modern smartphones.

Because of this, users who spend long hours on their phones may start to feel some fatigue over time. This is especially noticeable during extended one-handed use, where the extra weight can make the device feel less comfortable to hold for long periods.

On the durability side, the phone does make up for its weight with strong protection. It comes with an IP68/IP69 rating, which means it is well protected against dust and can also handle water exposure.

Display

Up front, the HUAWEI Mate 80 Pro has a 6.76-inch LTPO OLED display with a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate and HDR Vivid support.

In our experience, the device delivered clear visuals for everyday use, like watching videos, browsing, and gaming.

The slim bezels also help the screen feel more open with a rounded corners design.

Overall, the display is good and reliable for everyday usage.

Camera

The device is equipped with a triple camera setup, which are 50MP main, 48MP telephoto, and 40MP ultrawide. On the front, it has a 13MP selfie camera.

In daylight, photos from all sensors come out sharp with natural colors and good detail. HDR processing is solid, offering a wide dynamic range.

Rear Camera Sample Shots (Daylight)

For low-light and indoor photography, performance remains reliable. The camera captures decent colors with good detail and sharpness, even in challenging lighting conditions.

Rear Camera Sample Shots (Lowlight)

However, selfie shots can sometimes look a bit pale when taken indoors. We do highly recommend using a flash when doing so.

Selfie Camera Sample Shots

For video, the phone supports up to 4K at 60fps on both rear and front cameras. Video quality is consistent, with good color saturation, decent stabilization, and well-handled highlights.

Performance

The HUAWEI Mate 80 Pro is powered by the Kirin 9030 Pro chipset.

In regular use, the device runs smoothly when switching between apps, browsing social media, and handling multitasking.

Background apps stay active without frequent reloads in most cases, which helps with general day-to-day convenience.

For gaming, the chipset is capable but still depends on the settings used. It is also suitable for light to moderate productivity tasks.

Benchmark Results

  • AnTuTu Benchmark: 1,594,799
  • Geekbench 6 CPU: 1,194 / 4,973
  • Geekbench 6 OpenCL: 5,650

Battery

The HUAWEI Mate 80 Pro is equipped with a 5750mAh battery, paired with 100W wired charging and 80W wireless charging support.

In everyday use, battery life is generally sufficient to last a full day under casual usage. This includes activities like social media browsing, messaging, video streaming, and light gaming.

When compared to some of the larger battery capacities currently available in the market, the 5750mAh cell is slightly on the smaller side.

However, it still falls within a range that is considered standard.
