Google Docs Now Supports Markdown Files

Google is adding support for Markdown files in Google Docs, allowing users to open, edit, and collaborate on .md and .markdown files without converting them into Google Docs format.

The update lets users work with Markdown content while keeping its original file type.

Users can also use Google Docs features such as real-time editing and comments without manually handling Markdown syntax or file conversions.

Google Drive is also adding rendered Markdown previews, allowing users to view formatted Markdown files with elements such as headings, tables, bullet points, and clickable links directly in Drive.

The feature is rolling out gradually to Google Workspace customers and users with personal Google accounts starting October 5, 2026.

Keep in mind that the rollout may take up to 15 days to reach all users.
