DOST Develops Smart Traffic System for Emergency Vehicles

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST), through the Advanced Science and Technology Institute (DOST-ASTI), has developed a smart traffic system.

This is called SERVis-STEER, which helps emergency vehicles move through traffic faster and more safely.

The system uses Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication technology, allowing ambulances, fire trucks, and other emergency vehicles to communicate directly with traffic infrastructure. When an emergency vehicle approaches an intersection, traffic signals can automatically adjust to provide a clear path and reduce delays.

SERVis-STEER also features a centralized platform that connects hospitals, dispatch centers, traffic management agencies, and emergency response units.

This enables real-time monitoring and coordination of emergency operations while ensuring that traffic priority is given only to authorized emergency vehicles.

According to DOST, the project aims to improve emergency response times, enhance road safety, and support the adoption of intelligent transportation systems in the Philippines.
