The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has announced that LRT and MRT passengers will soon be able to pay using debit cards, credit cards, and mobile wallets like GCash and Maya.
This upgrade is part of the shift toward a cashless, open-loop payment system in public transportation.
Set to roll out in July 2025, the system will replace the current Beep card setup.
Commuters will simply need to tap their phone or card at the stations to pay for their fare, this means no more lining up to buy tickets or reload a Beep card.
Although the exact launch date has not yet been confirmed, the DOTr is working closely with transport operators and financial service providers to prepare for the launch.
According to Presidential Communication Office, pilot testing and public information campaigns are also planned in the coming months.
The project supports the government’s push to modernize public transport systems and make commuting more convenient for Filipinos.
