HUAWEI nova Y73 Review

HUAWEI nova Y73

Today, we’re going to talk about HUAWEI‘s latest affordable device, the HUAWEI nova Y73.

This device comes equipped with some notable features, but one of its key selling points is its massive battery.

However, aside from that, what else does this phone offer? And more importantly, is it worth the price? Let’s find out.

Design

First, let’s take a look at its design. The overall appearance is quite impressive.

Considering its price, it does have a premium look. Our review unit’s colorway is called Dynamic Plain Blue, and when light reflects on the back panel, it reveals an X-shaped pattern, which is pretty cool.

The finish is smooth and glossy but thankfully not prone to fingerprint smudges. It uses polycarbonate material for both the back panel and the frame.

In terms of dimensions, the device is a bit on the heavier side, weighing 203g with a thickness of 8.25mm.

Speaking of its frame, you’ll find the volume rocker and power button on the right, while the X Button sits on the left. At the bottom, you’ll see the SIM tray, USB-C port, microphone, and speaker grille.

Design-wise, HUAWEI does a decent job of delivering a premium-looking smartphone at this price point. Additionally, it comes with an IP64 rating and includes a dedicated shortcut button to access your most frequently used apps.

Display

Now let’s flip over the device and look at its display.

The HUAWEI nova Y73 boasts a 6.67-inch HD+ IPS LCD screen with a resolution of 720 x 1604 pixels.

It’s paired with a 90Hz refresh rate and a peak brightness of 1000 nits. Although it doesn’t offer a Full HD display, the higher refresh rate helps deliver smoother animations when navigating the interface.

As for outdoor use, it may not be the best, but it can handle a bit of direct sunlight, though noticeable glare is still present.

For media consumption, the quality is surprisingly decent.

We used it for watching videos, and despite the lower resolution, we didn’t have any major issues with display clarity.

Cameras

The HUAWEI nova Y73 features a dual rear camera setup composed of a 50MP main shooter and an unspecified secondary lens. On the front, it has an 8MP selfie camera.

Camera performance is decent in daylight, delivering wide dynamic range, good details, and ample sharpness.

However, in low-light conditions, it struggles, colors are visible, but the lack of detail and sharpness results in soft and blurry images.

Lowlight Sample Shots

For selfies, as long as you’re in a well-lit environment, the results are acceptable, with true-to-life skin tones and decent detail.

Selfie Camera Sample Shot

When it comes to video, the rear camera can shoot up to 1080p at 60fps, while the front-facing camera is limited to 1080p at 30fps.

Performance

Under the hood, the HUAWEI nova Y73 is powered by a 14nm Kirin 710A chipset. Our review unit comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.

In day-to-day usage, we did encounter occasional stutters and lags, especially when multitasking. It runs on EMUI 12, which offers a clean look, but unfortunately comes with a lot of pre-installed apps that may clutter the experience.

We also tested it for gaming, and while it delivered acceptable performance, there were occasional frame drops.

Here are some of its benchmark results:

Battery Life

One of its standout features is the 6620mAh battery, which is paired with 40W HUAWEI SuperCharge.

In our video loop test, it lasted around 22 hours and 37 minutes, a very impressive result at this price point.

For charging, going from 0 to 100% took us about 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Price and Verdict

The HUAWEI nova Y73 is priced at PHP 9,999 for the 8GB + 256GB configuration.

Overall, it’s a durable budget smartphone that offers great battery life without breaking the bank. While it may not excel in performance or camera quality, it’s a solid choice for users who prioritize battery longevity and affordability.
