Design

The Honor 9 Lite sports a glass front and back along with a metal frame. It measures 151 x 71.9 x 7.6 mm and weighs 149g. On the other hand, the OPPO F7 has an all plastic body and measures 156 x 75.3 x 7.8 mm and weighs 158g. Out of the two smartphones, the OPPO F7 is the only one that bears the notch. Both devices have no physical or capacitive buttons since they made use of on-screen buttons.

Moving on to the rear part of the devices, both of their cameras are located at the back albeit the Honor 9 Lite has a dual main camera while the OPPO F7 only has a single one. The two smartphones’ fingerprint scanner is located at the middle with their brand underneath.

The usual power button can be found on the right side of the smartphones. The difference would be the positioning of their volume rockers. In the Honor 9 Lite, the volume control is also located on the right side along with its SIM tray. Meanwhile, the volume control in the OPPO F7 is seen on the left side of the phone along with a SIM tray.

At the bottom of the smartphones, you’ll find speaker grilles, USB Type 2.0 port, 3.5mm audio jack, and a mic.

The design of the two smartphones is simple and minimalistic. Both seem to have a glossy back which makes them prone to fingerprint smudges. Because of this, it’s a good thing that the two of them arrived with a clear phone case.

Display

The Honor smartphone features a 5.65″ IPS LCD display with a resolution of 1080 x 2160 pixels and an aspect ratio of 18:9. On the other hand, the OPPO F7 sports a 6.23″ LTPS IPS LCD notched display. It has a screen resolution of 1080 x 2280 pixels and an aspect ratio of 19:9.

We tried setting the two phones in their brightest setting. The Honor 9 Lite produced a brighter display than the other device.

Watching movies on these devices was enjoyable since both were vibrant enough and the colors are accurate. Furthermore, the color and details don’t change even if you view the phones from different angles.

Camera

Phone Rear Camera  Front Camera
Honor 9 Lite Dual: 13 MP + 2 MP, PDAF, depth sensor, LED flash, HDR, panorama Dual: 13 MP + 2 MP, depth sensor
OPPO F7 16 MP, PDAF, LED flash, HDR, panorama 25 MP

The Honor 9 Lite sports a dual rear camera with 13MP + 2MP lens as well as a dual front camera with 13MP + 2MP lens. On the other hand, the OPPO F7 features a 16MP main camera and a 25MP selfie snapper. Looking at the specs, the Honor 9 Lite clearly has an advantage since it sports a dual rear and front camera.

To fully determine the quality of the two smartphone’s camera, we took some shots in various scenarios.

In this first photo, the Honor 9 Lite had the brighter picture. On the other hand, the one with more details is the OPPO F7. This shot had more contrast which further enhanced the edges of the leaves.

We also tried taking pictures indoors to see how the smartphones will do in this lighting condition. As you can see, the OPPO F7 still had the more detailed shot. In terms of colors, the Honor 9 Lite has the more accurate one. This can be seen through the color of the painting and the wood.

Unlike the previous images, the Honor smartphone’s shot had more contrast here. The details are clearer and compared with the OPPO F7’s photo, the lights aren’t scattered or over-exposed.

The OPPO F7 has a tendency of brightening the final picture and making it more vibrant. This can clearly be seen here. The photo looked livelier since it had more color in it. However, the Honor 9 Lite still had the more accurate-looking shot here.

The difference between the two shots is really apparent here. The color on the left image had a blueish cool tone to it, in contrast to the image on the right with an orangeish warm tone. The lights on both photos are a bit scattered although it’s more controlled on the Honor 9 Lite’s shot. Detail-wise, both shots did well.

As mentioned earlier, the OPPO F7 had the more vibrant outputs when it comes to images with a lot of colors. Here are some examples.

Let’s move on to selfies. These ones were taken normally. As you can see, the Honor 9 Lite produced a softer output which smoothed out the subject’s face as well. In terms of details, the OPPO F7 won. The picture had more contrast in it and it’s also more vibrant.

This time, we tried using both phones’ beautify mode. Both made the subject’s skin fairer and smoother although, in the case of the Honor 9 Lite, the subject lost her beauty mark. Similar to the previous image, the OPPO F7 shot had the more detailed shot.

The two smartphones have a feature that lets the user add a bokeh effect to their picture. In these photos, the Honor 9 Lite had the more natural-looking bokeh effect since it isn’t as overly blurred as the OPPO F7’s bokeh effect. Nevertheless, the two bokeh effects look pleasing to the eye. Both devices were also able to fully capture the subject.

Audio

The OPPO F7 is louder compared to the Honor 9 Lite although the latter had the clearer sound. The OPPO smartphone’s bass was a bit overpowering which made the music a bit scratchy on maximum volume.

All in all, the two devices have clear and good quality audio for their price range.

Battery

As for the battery juice of the two smartphones, both can last you through the day. The OPPO F7 is packed with a bigger battery capacity having 3400mAh compared to the Honor device with 3000mAh.

The Honor 9 Lite took 1 hour and 42 mins to charge it from 20% to 100%. Meanwhile, the OPPO smartphone took 1 hour and 5 minutes to charge.

User Experience

OPPO F7

Let’s talk about the smartphones’ security feature first. Both of them sport a fingerprint scanner as well as a face unlock feature. In terms of speed, the OPPO F7 was slightly faster with its fingerprint scanner and the same goes with its face unlock feature. It’s a good thing to note that the Honor 9 Lite won’t unlock when the owner is asleep as its face unlock doesn’t work when the user’s eyes are closed. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for the OPPO F7.

The Honor 9 Lite is powered by the HiSilicon Kirin 659 with a Mali-T830 MP2 GPU coupled with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. It runs on Android 8.0 Oreo. On the other hand, the OPPO F7 is powered by the Helio P60 and a Mali-G72 MP3 GPU. It contains 4GB of RAM and an internal storage of 64GB. In addition, the smartphone runs on Android 8.1 Oreo. Both of their storages can be expanded via a microSD card.

We tested some benchmarking tools and these are the results:

Honor 9 Lite 88376 934; 3722 4882
OPPO F7 139358 1515; 5737 7881

In terms of gaming, both smartphones were able to perform well. The games we played were Asphalt 9, AOV, and PUBG. Launching the games was fast and during gameplay, we experienced no lag and navigation was smooth.

Verdict

The Honor 9 Lite is priced at PHP 7,990 whereas the OPPO F7 is priced at PHP 14,990. Price-wise, the Honor device might be more worth it considering its specs since it was able to compete with the OPPO F7 in terms of performance.

Looking at the specs, there were some areas where the OPPO smartphone clearly had the upper hand. However, we have to consider the Honor 9 Lite’s price. Even though the Honor smartphone’s price is half the OPPO F7’s price, it has proven itself as a worthy competitor for other midrange smartphones.
