HMD Global is Falling Behind in Updating their Devices to Android 11

HMD Global just recently announced its new schedule when it comes to updating their devices in Android 11. In recent years, the company promised and had delivered when it comes to their constant updates. Now, it seems that the company is lagging behind in schedule when it comes to updating their smartphone devices with the latest Android 11 OS.

The new timeline shows us that the company will still be updating its devices but will just be pushed by a quarter. The Nokia 6.2 will be given an Android 11 update which estimated to arrive during the third quarter of this year, instead of Q2 2021. On the other hand, the Nokia 5.3 will be updated sometime within this quarter which was supposed to receive during Q4 2020 to Q1 2021.

Originally, the Android 11 updates were expected last year in October which was set to roll out on three devices. The rest of the new lineup from HMD was supposed to get their updates during the first half of 2021. Also, the Nokia 8.3 5G, the company’s first device to receive the Android, was supposed to receive the update during Q4 2020 but rolled out during February 2021.

There are no details that HMD Global shared on the reason why they are slipping with the updates but one possibility is that the company doesn’t have any control when it comes to most of its hardware and software for its phones. The majority of Nokia-branded phones are handled by external ODMs, which includes development and manufacturing. They are also responsible when it comes to maintaining software support. It was also reported by Omdia in 2020 that most Nokia-branded phones were designed by ODMs.
