Telegram Facing Possible Ban in the Philippines

Secretary of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Henry Aguda shared that the government is considering a possible ban on Telegram.

This is during his recent interview on DZRH’s Dos Por Dos, stating that the platform is concerning over the spread of online pornography, scams, and other illegal activities on the platform.

As some of you may already know, Telegram allows users to hide their phone numbers and create multiple profiles on a single device.

The messaging platform also lets users easily delete messages for both parties in a conversation.

According to Aguda, these features have made Telegram a preferred platform for scammers and individuals involved in distributing illegal content.

Aguda added that the DICT is working closely with the Philippine National Police and the National Bureau of Investigation to fight online crimes, as many recent financial scams in the country use social engineering tactics to trick people into giving access to their accounts.
