Japan Display announces Flexible Display
Looks like it’s going to be a battle of the flexible display for 2017, especially for smartphones.
Japan Display, one of Apple’s main screen supplier is currently developing a flexible display or technically called as ‘FULL ACTIVE FLEX‘.
With a flexible IPS LCD 1080p FHD screen that measures at 5.5-inch, the ‘Full Active Flex’ will allow smartphone manufacturers to adopt curved screens for a cheaper price.
So far, only OLED screens are capable of ‘bending’ the display like the Galaxy S7 Edge. But that is about to change.

LCD screens will now be able to join the likes of OLED that permits screen curvature due to the plastic substrate found on both sides of the liquid crystal layer.
Japan Display also included that ‘it is possible to prevent cracking from occurring when the display is dropped‘.
As one of its new platform technologies, the company stated that it ‘will consider adopting it not only in smartphone displays but also in notebook PCs, automotive applications and other various products‘.
As for the upcoming iPhone 8, rumors and speculations point out that the base model will sport an LCD screen while the premium model will have an OLED screen.
