Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max tops DxOMark’s video ranking, places 4th overall

DxOMark, a camera review and test platform, tested the recently launched Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max. The platform tested the device’s performance in terms of zoom, picture, and video quality, where it ranked first in video and fourth overall.

Based on DxOMark, the iPhone 16 Pro Max amassed different scores from different categories. It scored 157 in Photo, 142 in Zoom, 80 in Bokeh, 157 top score in Video, and 93 top score in Preview.

The Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max garnered an overall camera score of 157, which is fourth in global ranking and in ultra-premium ranking. It outscored last year’s Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max and other flagship smartphones from other popular brands like Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Ultra.

The camera ranking is still being topped by the HUAWEI Pura 70 Ultra with a score of 163.

Other than Video and Preview, the device also received a top score in terms of Color, Noise, and Stabilization.

Moreover, the test platform also listed the Pros and Cons of the Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max:

Pros

  • Class-leading overall video quality, with highly detailed and noise-free video images, even when taken in low light.
  • Outstanding color performance with images containing an extensive range of bright and vivid hues (especially when viewed on Apple’s HDR screens)

  • Extremely accurate image preview to capture
  • Zero shutter lag, allowing to capture the decisive moment in most conditions

  • Inconsistencies when tele zooming, with images losing some detail within the 2x to 5x range

To achieve those camera scores, Apple equipped the iPhone 16 Pro Max with cameras consisting of a :

  • 48MP main sensor, quad pixels, 24mm equivalent f/1.78-aperture lens, Dual Pixel AF, OIS
  • 48MP ultra-wide sensor, 13mm equivalent f/2.2-aperture lens, Dual Pixel AF
  • 12MP telephoto sensor, 120 mm equivalent f/2.8-aperture lens, Dual Pixel AF

According to Apple, the smartphone can shoot up to 4K Dolby Vision video recording at 24 fps, 25 fps, 30 fps, 60 fps, 100 fps (Fusion), or 120 fps (Fusion). It can also shoot other recording modes such as Cinematic mode up to 4K HDR at 30 fps, Action mode up to 2.8K at 60 fps, Spatial video recording at 1080p at 30 fps, and ProRes video recording up to 4K at 120 fps with external recording.
