Looking for a good mid-range phone? We put to test the two midrange devices, Asus Zenfone 3 Laser and Huawei P9 Lite. Both devices are under the same category but what is the difference between them? Let us find out in our latest comparison.
Design and Build
Huawei P9 Lite’s body is made of aluminum, with glass at the top-back portion of the phone, rounded corners and edges, and antenna lines that run along the sides. At the top, sits the headphone jack while at the bottom is where the micro USB port and dual speaker grills are located.
Moving to the left side is the volume rocker and power button and on the other side is the hybrid dual sim card slot. The fingerprint scanner is found at the back of the device.
The Asus Zenfone 3 Laser is made of metal backing, 2.5D curved glass, rounded edges, and antenna lines on the top/bottom back portion. At the top, sits the headphone jack while at the bottom is where the micro USB port and speaker grille are located.
On the left side is the volume rocker and power button and on the other side is the hybrid dual sim card slot. The fingerprint scanner is also found at the back of the device.
The P9 Lite is noticeably smaller and has better one-hand grip than Zenfone 3 Laser but overall, the stylish look and finish of the latter is better.
Display
Both devices come with IPS LCD 1080p display with the P9 Lite 5.2″ screen at 424ppi and Zenfone 3 Laser 5.5″ screen with corning gorilla glass 3 at 401ppi.
Despite the small difference in size, both produce great and natural display with the P9 Lite leaning on a bit warmer color tone, though this is down to user preference.
Camera
Both devices are equipped with 13MP f/2.0 main shooter with P9 Lite accompanied by autofocus and LED flash and Zenfone 3 Laser with laser autofocus and dual tone flash.
In daylight shooting, Zenfone 3 Laser’s shooter appears to be sharper and captures colors naturally compared to P9 Lite’s warmer color tone.
The same can be said at nighttime or low-light shooting but P9 Lite’s shooter tends to expose bright areas at night.
Both selfie cameras for each device is at 8MP f/2.0. P9 Lite’s selfie shooter is noticeably better, more detailed, and captures accurate color in daylight and thanks to its on-screen “flash”, it was able to provide sufficient lighting under low-light.
The main shooter of both devices can record up to 1080p@30fps.
The Antutu benchmark shows that P9 Lite’s HiSilicon Kirin 650 beats Zenfone 3 Laser’s Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 by a 10k margin. Additionally, P9 Lite slightly loads faster when opening apps.
P9 Lite runs under Emotion UI 4.1 while Zenfone 3 Laser comes with ZenUI 3.0 with the latter coming with a lot of pre-installed bloatware but navigating both devices were smooth and fast.
Both performed average on our battery test with almost 30hours on endurance test and 4.5hrs screen on time. The only difference is the charging time where the P9 Lite charges an hour faster than the Zenfone 3 Laser.
Support for hi-res audio is only found in P9 Lite, though both speakers are loud, the P9 Lite produces better sound quality.
Asus Zenfone 3 Laser retails at P11,995 ($250) pesos while Huawei P9 Lite P11,990 ($250US) pesos. For less than P12,000, you get a 1080p display, premium metal build, fingerprint security scanner, and 3-4GB RAM regardless which device you will choose.
For this comparison, Asus Zenfone 3 Laser wins this one by a very slight margin. Its design and camera quality is hard to ignore compared to Huawei P9 Lite’s performance and battery advantage.
For a mid-range device, expect Zenfone 3 Laser to provide better photos if you are more of a photo-centric user otherwise, choose P9 Lite if you are more of an all-around user since its charging capability is a huge factor if you are going to do a bit of everything else.
