Ever wished South Korea could be your next home? Well, dream no more as the new workcation visa makes it a reality!
Starting January 1, 2024, following in the footsteps of Indonesia and Thailand, South Korea is riding the workcation wave. The country is extending a warm invitation to remote workers for a prolonged stay of up to two years (with the possibility of a one-year extension), allowing them to bring their family along for the experience.
Before, if you wanted to work or take a workcation in Korea as a foreigner, you could get a tourist visa or stay without a visa for up to 90 days. However, there’s a new system that lets employees and employers from foreign companies tour and work remotely in Korea for a longer time. It’s like an extended opportunity compared to the old rules.
As shared by Camille Santiago of PhilSTAR Life, the justice ministry stated, “To make remote work and vacation of foreigners in Korea smoother, we have decided to launch a new digital nomad visa.”
How to Book Korean Visa Appointment Online
Tourists meeting the following conditions are eligible for the new system:
Applicants must provide proof of employment and details of any criminal record. Additionally, tourists must secure private health insurance with coverage of at least 100 Million Won (or PHP4.2 Million).
But here’s the kicker! While exploring Korea, you can bring your spouse and kids under 18. But, note that they are not allowed to apply for jobs within the country.
Take note that this is a pilot program for now, but there’s potential for it to become a permanent thing.
