Samsung fans in Europe might be in for a shock. Instead of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, Samsung’s own Exynos 2400 chip will power the upcoming Galaxy S24 line.
Last year, all Galaxy S23s came with Snapdragon’s 8 Gen 2 chips, so this is a big change. Before that, it’s interesting to note that Samsung usually used its own Exynos chips for its global sales.
The Exynos 2400 is not a small chip; it has ten cores and a top clock speed of 3.19 GHz on its most important core. It’s almost as good as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, whose main processor runs at the same clock speed. There are, however, subtle differences: Exynos is said to have a 1+2+3+4 core layout, while Snapdragon is said to have a 1+5+2 core layout. This could mean that Snapdragon and Exynos have different speed metrics.
Cost could be one reason. Snapdragon chips aren’t cheap, and you have to pay a fee to use them. By going with Exynos, Samsung could be trying to save money, especially since they are increasing the RAM in their top phones for 2024, which is another cost to think about.
