Elon Musk’s X Plans to Erase Headlines From News Links

Elon Musk wants to change how news links show up on his social media site X, which used to be called Twitter. This could make it harder for news publishers to get people to read their stories.

Musk said in a post late Monday night that X plans to remove the headline and text from links to news stories shared on the platform, keeping only the main image.

Musk is probably trying to get people to spend more time on X and sign up for the paid service to get more information.

It’s not clear how this will affect advertisers on the app, which Musk said in July had 540 million monthly users.

At the moment, news links show up on a user’s timeline as “cards” with a picture, the source’s address, and a shortened headline. This kind of packaging helps get hits and readers for publishers.

But with the shortened links, users might end up writing some text along with their posts, and they might eventually think about X’s paid service, which lets you write up to 25,000 characters in a single post.

Musk hopes that the changes will make X a better place for content makers.

Premium users can now post longer videos, their posts show up higher in the feed, and they get a cut of the money made from ads.
