Palmer Luckey, one of the Oculus creators, has now created a new VR headset that, if you die in-game, would literally end your life. The Japanese anime SAO is clearly the design inspiration for this VR headgear (Sword Art Online).
For those who don’t know, Palmer no longer works for the company he started; it is now owned by Meta, the parent corporation of Facebook. It seems, though, that the Oculus Rift designer is still engaged in VR headset development. Luckey recently made modifications to a Meta Quest Pro VR headset with an explosive twist. The prototype of this model has an explosive attached to it. Once the player fails or is killed in-game, this could kill them.
The NerveGear headgear from a well-known anime and manga served as inspiration for the invention. The VR headgear was modified in the Sword Art Online series to detonate when the user died in the virtual reality game. On his blog, Luckey revealed the creation in honor of Sword Art Online Day, which is observed on November 6. On this day in the world of manga and animation, 10,000 players were confined to the VR MMORPG Sword Art Online.
Luckey demonstrated in his essay that there was a symbiotic interaction between the SAO and Oculus. Additionally, he launched the Oculus Rift DK1 Kickstart at the same time as the fourth episode of the anime that was broadcast in Japan. The NerveGear technology (which presented realistic simulations) enabled people to envision the future of VR technology in reality. This show rekindled the public’s interest in virtual reality.
