In an announcement last Wednesday, July 27, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is seeking the engagement of senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs) to avail of a 5% special discount on Basic Necessities and Prime Commodities (BNPCs).
In a statement, the DTI referred to Joint Memorandum Circular No.01, 2022, which outlines guidelines on mandating statutory benefits to senior citizens and persons with disabilities through online and phone purchases (e-commerce).
Their regular 20% discount on various goods and services differs from this 5% special discount.
According to Undersecretary Ruth B. Castelo of Department of Trade and Industry, “these benefits and privileges under the said circular, including the 5% discount on BNPC purchases, are intended to be utilized not just during pandemic, but throughout the year.”
As a result of the 5% discount, senior citizens and people with disabilities are allowed to buy a maximum of Php1,300/week, regardless of whether they buy online or physical.
Additionally, must use the amount on at least four different BNPC products for the consumption of the seniors or PWDs themselves.
A senior citizen or PWD must disclose to the seller that they are eligible for the discount. In addition, they must submit the front and final pages of the purchase booklet along with a digital copy or photo of their ID.
Note: a copy of those documents should be presented at the time of delivery.
