Sony has just recently published its recent earnings report which includes its sales with its newly launched PlayStation 5 console. In the report, it states that Sony has sold a total of 4.5 million units since its launch last year. Even with the current state of everyone that we are under a pandemic as well as the recent issue of scalpers, Sony was able to mass-produce the console.
It also includes the demand of PlayStation 4 dropping with 1.4 million consoles shipped from the fourth quarter of last year. This is a 77 decrease from the previous year. The report also shows that Sony has sold fewer PS4s during the holiday season comparing it to the sales they had during the third quarter of 2020.
According to analyst Daniel Ahmad, Q4 of 2020 was the best quarter for Sony. The company’s gaming division was able to amass an increase of 40 percent revenue, reaching a total of 883.2 billion Yen ($8.4 billion). The division also experienced a surge in profit of about 50 percent that reached 80.2 billion ($763.3 million). This was the result of higher sales coming from game sales, PlayStation Plus subscriptions, and better margins on PS4 hardware.
However, Sony admitted that some sales related to the PS6 launch somehow tipped the balance of its profit. Also, scalpers who are either selling it too much or too low are affecting the increase in their profit. Sony disclosed that a loss happened due to “strategic price points for PS5 hardware that were set lower than the manufacturing costs.”
On the other hand, Microsoft didn’t give any specifics for its Xbox Series X or Series S sales with last week’s reports. The company only disclosed that the Xbox hardware’s revenue was up to 86 percent year-on-year.
