Sony Ships 40 Million PlayStation 5 Units Globally

Sony first released the PlayStation 5 in November 2020. At that time, the COVID-19 outbreak was shaking the world to its core. Chip shortages caused problems in the supply chain, but these problems have been getting better over time. Now, the Japanese company has said how many of its consoles have been sold since it came out. There are both digital and disk forms of the PS5.

As the follow-up to the PlayStation 4, the PlayStation 5 came out in late 2020. Since it came out during the pandemic, it was hard to keep up with the high demand for a number of reasons. A lot of gamers had trouble getting their hands on the PS5. But things have changed a lot for the better in the last year.

The PlayStation 5 sold 10 million units in just eight months after it came out. This made it the fastest-selling PS system in the company’s history. In January of this year, the number of sales went over $30 million. This was a year and a half after the first record was set in July 2021. Also, it means that Sony sold the last 10 million units it needed to hit 40 million in just six months, starting in January 2023. The sales numbers are for both the PS5 discs and the PS5 streaming games. The number of sales is going up.

With 159 million units sold over 20 years, the Sony PlayStation 2 is still the best-selling system in the company’s history. Sony sent out 117 million PS4s all over the world, and it took six years for the console to hit the 100 million mark. Since the PS4 has sold 40 million units in three years, it’s possible that the current-generation PlayStation 5 will sell even more and reach the same goal in less time.

Jim Ryan, the president of Sony Interactive, said that there are now enough PlayStation 5s to meet the demand. This has also taken away the chance for people to buy the system and sell it for more than it was worth. The company is having different deals in different markets to help sell more PS5s.
