Samsung Galaxy J7+ vs ASUS Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro Comparison

The Samsung Galaxy J7+ was launched just this Monday, and its price point (₱19,990) along with what it offers is a competitive one. What it goes against for this comparison is the ASUS Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro (₱18,995). Without further ado, let’s jump directly to design.

Design

Even with the seemingly non-stop release of smartphones with 18:9 displays, the J7+ and Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro stuck to 16:9 displays. Off the front, the glaring differences are the secondary lens that the Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro has and the J7+’s accented soft-touch keys. At the back, the J7+’s flush dual-lens camera and stealthier look make up for a simpler design. The sides are low-key too on the J7+, with the Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro’s being elegant. Ports are similar, and both have hybrid dual-SIM trays.

Display

Both phones sport AMOLED displays, with the J7+’s being a Super AMOLED. And despite being strikingly similar in features and specifications, the J7+’s display tend to be more vibrant in some cases.

Details and brightness are the same for both, and auto brightness adjustment seems to work better on the Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro.

ROM/UX

The J7+ comes with Samsung Experience 8.5 out of the box, providing access to Bixby Assistant and Bixby Vision. Although ASUS has stepped up with their ZenUI 4.0, Samsung’s more developed Samsung Experience 8.5 feels better to use and is easier on the eyes. Going through the Home screen and Settings, the J7+ is more efficient to use.

What ZenUI 4.0 does noticeably better is the Camera UI. Everything that a power user may need is just one tap or swipe away. While you may argue that Samsung does basically the same, ZenUI 4.0 does more.

With what these phones offer, is the additional 1000 Pesos for the J7+ justified over the Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro? Let’s find out.

BENCHMARKS

As I have mentioned, you would start to think if the Helio P20 was a good choice considering other smartphones well below 20,000 Pesos. Against a Snapdragon 625, it is no match in synthetic tests. But in real-world use and gaming, both are on-par with overall usage favoring the J7+ more, especially in the battery department. Neither gets uncomfortably hot under long usage even with their metal unibody.

Retaining the iconic J7 speaker positioning, the J7+ doesn’t perform too far from its siblings. Against the Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro, it’s weaker on the room volume but provides better detail.

Plugging in my ZS3’s on both sounded similar, even with the EQ fine-tuned to my taste.

Verdict

If I have to choose one of the two, it’d be the J7+ with its better support, cameras, and overall usability. To add, I’m a huge fan of sleek and low-profile smartphones. What about you?
