PLDT and its wireless brand SMART Communications partnered with Chinese Tech giant Huawei to officially deploy and activate first 5G base stations or cell sites in Makati and Clark, Pampanga.
The deployment will be beneficial for early adopters like businesses and IOT-enabled devices despite there are no big numbers of 5G-ready devices for consumers such as smartphones.

On the other hand, Globe has also activated its first 5G cell sites in Clark, Pampanga but not in Metro Manila. Aside from 5G coverage, Globe also has completed 95% coverage of 700 MHz frequency to its 4G LTE to its existing areas.
Just last week, Mislatel Consortium composed of China Telecom and Udenna Corporation has been named the 3rd telco player and is expected to break the duopoly of the two telecom giants. They will also start firing up 3G and 4G cell sites nationwide as early as 2019.
