Google is changing model availability and usage limits for Gemini Apps starting in October 2026.
Under the new model availability, users without a plan will have access to the Flash-Lite model. AI Plus subscribers will have access to Flash-Lite and Flash, while AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers will have access to Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro.
Users can also select low, medium, or high effort levels for available models. Higher effort levels can provide more detailed responses but will use more of the user’s usage limit. AI Ultra subscribers will also have access to Deep Think for more advanced reasoning.
Google is also moving Gemini to compute-based usage limits. Limits will refresh every five hours until users reach their weekly limit. Usage will depend on factors such as prompt complexity, features used, and chat length.
Paid plans will have higher limits than non-subscribers. AI Plus will have twice the standard limit, AI Pro four times the standard limit, and AI Ultra five or 20 times the AI Pro limit, depending on the subscription.
Features like media generation, Deep Research, Pro, extended thinking, and Deep Think use more of the usage limit.
The changes will begin rolling out to users without a Google AI subscription on October 9. AI Plus subscribers will receive an email with information about when the changes will apply to their accounts.
