Replaceable Phone Batteries to Return by 2027

The European Union (EU) will require new smartphones and tablets sold in its market to have user-replaceable batteries starting February 18, 2027.

Under the new rules, users must be able to remove and replace a device’s battery using standard tools such as screwdrivers, and manufacturers will no longer be allowed to rely on adhesives that require heat or solvents to remove.

The announcement also stated that if a special tool is needed, it must be provided to users for free.

The regulation also requires manufacturers to make replacement batteries available at a reasonable price for at least five years after a device is introduced.

According to the EU, the new rules aim to reduce electronic waste, extend the lifespan of devices, improve battery recycling, and lower repair costs for consumers.

Easier battery removal is also expected to reduce fire risks during the recycling process.

The regulation includes limited exemptions for specialized devices, such as certain medical or industrial equipment, where removable batteries could affect safety.

Devices with batteries that retain at least 80% of their original capacity after 1,000 charge cycles and meet IP67 dust and water resistance requirements may also qualify for an exemption.

The EU is also introducing a digital “battery passport.” Through a QR code, users and recyclers will be able to access information such as a battery’s carbon footprint, recycled material content, chemical composition, and overall health.
