WhatsApp is reportedly developing its own cloud backup service for iPhone users.
The feature was spotted in the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS by WABetaInfo.
Once available, users will be able to choose between iCloud and WhatsApp’s own cloud storage in the Chat Backup settings.
According to the report, WhatsApp plans to offer up to 2GB of free cloud storage for backups.
Unlike iCloud backups, backups stored on WhatsApp’s servers will be end-to-end encrypted by default, meaning only the user can access them. Users can secure their backups using a passkey, a password, or a 64-digit encryption key.
The new option may also help users save iCloud storage, which is limited to 5GB on Apple’s free plan and is shared across photos, documents, device backups, and other apps.
For users who need more space, WhatsApp is reportedly exploring paid storage plans.
There is currently no official release date for the feature on iOS or Android, and it is not yet available for beta testers.
