Elon Musk announced on Saturday that Starlink‘s satellite internet services were activated in Ukraine to support the country during the Russian invasion. The billionaire granted access to the network controlled by SpaceX after requests from Mykhailo Fedorov, the country’s Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation.
The official had directly asked the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, via Twitter, to activate the internet service in Ukraine. “While you try to colonize Mars — Russia try to occupy Ukraine! Russian rockets attack Ukrainian civil people,” says Fedorov. “We ask you to provide Ukraine with Starlink stations and to address sane Russians to stand,” the tweet continues.

Musk, in turn, responded promptly to the country’s deputy prime minister, communicating that the service is already active in Ukraine. In addition, new terminals will be shipped to contribute to the stability of communications during military conflicts, although there is no mention of a delivery timeframe.
With the support of satellite internet developed by Elon Musk’s company, Russia is unable to take down Ukrainian network services without attacking US-based SpaceX servers, so that civilians and other entities remain communicating without interference in Ukraine.

SpaceX is one of the technology companies offering help to Ukraine during the invasion led by Vladimir Putin. Apple, for example, has revealed that it will provide support to civilians during the conflict. “We will do everything we can for our Ukrainian team and support humanitarian efforts in the region,” said CEO Tim Cook.
