Apple Seeks Patent for Augmented-Reality Windshield

Apple Augmented-Reality Windshield

After releasing the Vision Pro headset earlier this year, the tech company is now looking into ways to bring augmented reality to your car. Apple is pretty sure that virtual reality is the future! Fun fact, Apple just filed a patent for an augmented-reality window.

According to the invention, the windshield that looks like a video game would help you in many ways as you drive around town. It could show the outline of your target if it’s hidden by other cars or buildings or put important signs on top of them. If the system thinks you’re going too fast, it could show you fake speed bumps or rumble strips and even work with your car to make it feel like you’re going over them. It might even be able to tell if there are kids outside or if you are driving into a school zone.

All of these sounds pretty useful uses of augmented reality, unlike some of the more bizarre ones that just make your phone or computer come to life and make you look a little silly as you swipe at the air in front of you. The patent doesn’t say how Apple would make these features work. It’s not as easy as just displaying information onto a screen to turn a whole windshield into a piece of technology.

Apple’s patent seems to have been in the works for a long time. The company’s application refers to other papers from 2015, which The Drive says shows that the patent has been in the works for a long time. Now, it looks like Apple is getting closer to being able to make its dream come true. Well, at least an enlarged one.
