vivo Joins Huawei and Xiaomi with New Self-Developed OS “BlueOS”

vivo, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer, has made a big reveal by launching its very own operating system, known as BlueOS.

This announcement was made during the 2023 Vivo Developer Conference.

The company began developing BlueOS back in 2018, with a specific goal in mind. What is it? To overcome the limitations of the Android app ecosystem.

Notably, BlueOS stands out as the world’s first operating system to utilize the Rust programming language for its system framework.

So, what’s under the hood of BlueOS? It boasts three key features:

  • intelligent interactions
  • smoother user experience
  • enhanced user data security

BlueOS is tailored to support large models and diverse interaction methods, including voice, text, gestures, and even brain waves.

BlueOS also incorporates the BlueXlink connection protocol, which employs a distributed design and plays nicely with industry-standard protocols. This ensures that data can move securely between different devices.

In terms of performance, vivo claims that BlueOS reduces memory usage by a significant 67% and increases rendering efficiency by 48%. It also introduces a super coroutine mechanism to boost response speed by 18%.

Security is another vital aspect, and BlueOS, built on the Rust-based system framework, is less susceptible to security issues arising from memory usage.

A noteworthy point is that BlueOS is versatile, capable of running on devices with as little as 32MB of RAM. This flexibility makes it suitable for a wide range of gadgets, from smart home appliances to wearables.

However, for vivo smartphone users, there’s no immediate plan to switch to BlueOS as the default operating system. Funtouch OS and OriginOS will continue to hold that role for vivo smartphones.

The first device set to run BlueOS is vivo’s upcoming smartwatch, the vivo Watch 3, launching on November 13 alongside the vivo X100 series smartphones.

Stay tuned for more tech innovations from vivo!
