Microsoft Deployed ChatGPT to US Government Azure Cloud

Microsoft has said that the US government can now use its Azure OpenAI Service in a way that is even safer and more compliant with legal standards for classification and security.

With Azure OpenAI Service for government, customers like the federal, state, and local governments of the United States and their partners can access OpenAI’s GPT large models, which are what make the famous ChatGPT AI writer work.

Microsoft hopes that by moving these models from the commercial cloud to a new, more private architecture, the government will be able to use the time-saving technology that has been getting a lot of attention in recent months.

The service’s REST APIs give the government access to language and multimedia models like GPT-3, GPT-4, and Embeddings.

The company thinks that government agencies will use these current models to make their own AI-powered apps that will help them run more efficiently.

With Azure OpenAI Service for government, you can expect the usual list of benefits and use cases, such as content generation, summary, optimizing semantic search, and generating and fixing code.

Microsoft tells the government about the 250,000 km of fiber optic and undersea lines that make up the backbone of its global network. This is done to show that its services are safe. The government says that its information will never leave this site and go to the public Internet.

Bill Chappell, CTO of Strategic Missions and Technologies at Microsoft, said in the announcement, “Only the queries submitted to the Azure OpenAI Service travel through an encrypted network to the Azure OpenAI model in the commercial environment. They do not stay in the commercial environment.”

Also, Chappell stated that government data is not used to train OpenAI’s models in the same way that consumer data is used.

How the US government plans to use generative AI to its advantage is still unknown, but its first steps are likely to be careful as it learns how to combine AI with the sensitive data it deals with.
