Social Media Giant Twitter Fixes Broken Links and Images

Monday morning, Twitter had some problems, users couldn’t click on links in tweets, and many people couldn’t see images in their timelines. Most of the site started working again in less than an hour.

During the partial outage, if you tried to click on a link, you got an error message that said, “your current API plan does not include access to this endpoint.” It was also observed that people experienced the error when they accessed the site in “Incognito” mode or were not logged in.

According to the Twitter Support account, “an internal change that had some unintended effects” caused the problem. While the issues were happening, some Verge employees could still use Twitter, but others couldn’t load the site.

CEO Elon Musk explained that a “small API change” had “massive ramifications.” In addition, he commented that the company’s code stack would probably require a complete rewrite because it is “extremely fragile for no good reason.”

Even though the company’s staff is getting smaller, Musk has kept pushing for new features, including changes that sound good but haven’t happened yet, like last month’s call for creators who post on the platform to share ad revenue or a plan to add a new paid tier to its API.

This latest outage happened about a week after Elon Musk fired most of the company’s remaining product team, including manager Esther Crawford, in the newest round of layoffs since he bought Twitter last fall. About a month ago, Twitter also had a similar outage. An employee accidentally deleted data for an internal service that limits how often people can use Twitter, causing the broken links and pictures reported by Platformer.
