The Land Transportation Office has begun issuing electronic driver’s licenses (eDL) in response to the shortage of plastic driver’s license cards that it has been experiencing.
Although the complete rules governing the electronic driver’s license are not scheduled to go into effect until July 25, holders of valid driver’s licenses may already be able to access their electronic driver’s licenses.
Because images and screen captures won’t be accepted, the electronic driver’s license (eDL) can only be viewed through the LTMS portal account. The electronic license will have a unique QR code and barcode that can be scanned by authorities for verification purposes.
Hector Villacorta, the officer-in-charge Assistant Secretary of the LTO, stated that the electronic driver’s license is “valid, secure, and an alternative form of authorization for persons operating motor vehicles.”
People with eDLs have the same rights and duties as people with real driver’s licenses. LTO enforcers will also accept the eDL as a legal form of authorization and identification.
Drivers who have been pulled over can show their eDL through the LTMS web account. Those who don’t will be charged with not having a driver’s license on them.
Drivers who are pulled over will also get electronic temporary operator’s passes that are good for 72 hours. Within this time, drivers must take care of their tickets or their temporary passes will end.
The LTO may also close the LTMS account of a driver with an eDL who has a current or unresolved breach.
NOTE: LTO won’t accept screen shots of the eDL.
