DOST Also Hacked, Email Addresses Exposed

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) confirmed being one of three government agencies that experienced cybersecurity breaches in August, preceding the PhilHealth ransomware attack in September.

The breach revealed about 1,000 experts’ and clients’ email addresses registered in DOST’s OneExpert portal, designed to connect the public with experts in various fields. The leak was detected on August 31, following a compromised administrator account accessing the OneExpert site.

However, unlike the PhilHealth attack, no ransom demand was made, leaving room for speculation regarding potential white-hat penetration tests aimed at exposing cybersecurity vulnerabilities.

The agencies involved emphasized that no sensitive personal data were compromised but acknowledged the need to enhance security measures.
