Android takes the lead
The most popular mobile operating system, Android, adds another title to its name as the most popular OS in terms of internet usage.
According to StatCounter, an independent web analytics company, Android led with 37.93% of global OS internet usage market share behind Windows OS‘ 37.91%. A first for Google and a first for Microsoft to fall into the second place.
“This is a milestone in technology history and the end of an era” – AODHAN CULLEN, STATCOUNTER CEO
Since the 1980s, Microsoft Windows led the race on the OS market worldwide – marking more than 30 years of reign. But for Google’s Android, it took them only a few years that was seen only with 2.4% market share five years ago.
What did Android do?
Culled said that the “main drivers of the breakthrough” heavily rely on the growth of smartphones to access the internet, a decline in sales of traditional PCs and the impact of Asia on the global market.
In North America and Europe, Windows still holds a large share followed by iOS and Android. However, in Asia, more than 50% of market share comes from Android with almost 30% coming from Windows OS.
