Yahoo Launches New Password-Free Log In System

Many tech companies have searched for ways to innovate security systems, with some turning to biometric fingerprint or eye scanners. This is in an effort to break the traditional password system – which undeniably is not so user-friendly and can still be very risky, inept and hack-able. And of course, some users can easily forget passwords.

Correspondingly, Yahoo is eliminating the agony of having to memorize passwords or even having to create one in the first place.

The company made available a new sign-in method approach called ‘on-demand’ passwords that aims to make users’ Yahoo account less vulnerable to hacks. This is much less of hustle being a one-step authentication than the traditional two-step password input system.

Just like the two-step authentication approach, users will be sent a unique time-sensitive code or password through an app or a text message if they need to log in. The twist though is that there will be no need to input a password anymore. With this new approach, users will not even have to have a permanent password tied to their accounts. Instead of the usual password textbox, a ‘send password’ button will be seen in enabling the system. Yahoo will still be offering two-step authentication system as an optional feature for its users.

The steps in acquiring this new feature is easy.

  1. Sign in to your Yahoo.com account.
  2. Click on your name at the top right corner to go to your account information page.
  3. Select “Security” in the left bar.
  4. Click on the slider for “On-demand passwords” to opt-in.
  5. Enter your phone number and Yahoo will send you a verification code.
  6. Enter the code.

The next time you sign-in, Yahoo system will send a password to your phone when you need it to log in. For now, this ‘on-demand’ password is available for U.S. Users only but hopefully this will be roll out in other regions as well.

Via CNET, Yahoo VP Dylan Casey dubbed this new feature as ‘the first step to eliminating passwords’. It might be offering convenience and security, but users need to be extra careful. to not let their smartphones fall into the wrong hands, or accounts will be easily compromised and put to risk since that person could easily get into your account without even having to input a password.
