Web Voter Registration May Soon Be Legal

Web Voter Registration is at its third and final reading, a bill letting people register to vote online and improving the current system could become law.

During the nominal voting on Monday, March 6, there were 307 votes in favor of House Bill (HB) No. 7241 and only one vote against it. This means that most lawmakers in the House of Representatives agreed with the bill.

The bill changes sections 2, 3, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 22, 23, 24, 29, 32, 33, and 45 of Republic Act (RA) No.8189. It makes the “Voter’s Registration Act of 1996” better.

Ferdinand G. Romualdez, who is both a co-author and a speaker, states that the proposed law aims to create “a clean, complete, permanent, and up-to-date list of voters.”

The bill also wants to set up a permanent system for registering voters, which the state will help with by adopting and using technologies that make online voter registration a choice.

Authorities must add a qualified voter to the permanent list of voters in a precinct or municipality based on their residence before allowing them to vote, as per the updated version of RA No. 8189.
