Two former Tesla employees have been sued. About 75,000 persons were affected by a data leak.
Handelsblatt discovered the data breach on May 10 after receiving 100 terabytes of private material from a whistleblower. The publication claimed the 23,000 hacked files showed Tesla failed to protect consumer, employee, and business partner data.
Tesla stated in an August 18 letter that accompanied the data breach notification that a foreign media outlet informed Tesla on May 10, 2023, that it had obtained Tesla confidential information.
These former Tesla employees misappropriated the information at Tesla’s IT security and data protection policies and shared it with the media outlet.c
The EV maker also sued the two former employees, but did not identify where. The letter stated that the cases led to the confiscation of electronic devices containing firm data.
The company added that Handelsblatt does not plan to disseminate personal information and in any event, is legally prohibited from using it inappropriately.
The “Tesla Files,” contained more than 100,000 names of former and current employees, his social security number, private email addresses, phone numbers, salaries, customer bank information, and production secrets.
The manufacturer also recommended consumers to be careful against “phishing” and thoroughly review their account records and credit histories.
