A German court has decided in Mannheim that Nokia will prevail in its patent dispute with OPPO in a case involving 4G/5G technology. The suit was brought due to negotiation breakdowns between Nokia and OPPO about patents relating to 4G (LTE) and 5G.
In addition to instituting cases in four countries, OPPO countersued Nokia in nine countries. In its statement, Oppo stated that Nokia’s lawsuit was shocking.
In the case of the disputed patents, this is the first ruling. There were nine Standard Essential Patents (SEPs) and five implementation patents that Nokia sued OPPO over.
With the most significant investment of approximately €129 billion ($130.3 billion) in the 5G SEPs segment, Nokia is considered the standard-bearer. Recently, it has gotten several settlements in this field.
Nokia has been granted a cease-and-desist order against OPPO by the Mannheim Regional Court. The objections made by OPPO against the decision were dismissed, stating that the firm was an unwilling licensee. Therefore, due to this ban, OPPO and OnePlus devices will no longer be available in Germany.
As you might expect, Nokia’s legal counsel in the Mannheim case came from teams that won both the Daimler and Lenovo cases. For the time being, Nokia is only licensing the use of its name for consumer products. As a result, it has established itself with many industry-leading patents.
