
Nigeria fined Meta $2.2 million (around PHP128M) for violating the Nigeria’s data protection and consumer rights laws.
On July 20, 2024, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) cited issues like unauthorized data sharing, depriving users of data control, discriminatory practices, and market abuse.
FCCPC CEO Adamu Abdullahi confirmed that the platform had been given chances to address these issues.
Despite the high number of internet users in the country, tech company has failed to comply with the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation, has failed to engage a Data Protection Compliance Organization and hasn’t filed the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation audit report for two years, the consumer protection agency said.
