ICYMI, Apple recently announced its second-generation 3nm chips — the Apple M4 Pro and the Apple M4 Pro Max chips. Apple also notes that alongside the Apple M4, which was announced earlier, they provide the Mac with significantly more advanced capabilities and power-efficient performance.
All three chips, including the Apple M4, are built using the 3nm technology and Apple also claims that they feature the world’s fastest CPU core which should bring the industry’s best single-threaded performance and far more efficient multithreaded performance.
Meanwhile, the GPU boasts faster cores and a 2x faster ray-tracing engine.
The base Apple M4 chip features up to 10-core CPU, with four performance cores and up to six efficiency cores (1.8x faster than M1), and 10-core GPU (up to 2x faster than M1). There’s also a 16-core Neural Engine built for Apple Intelligence.
With a bandwidth of up to 120GB/s and up to 32GB of unified memory, it can now accommodate up to four Thunderbolt 4 connections and two external displays in addition to the built-in display.
The Apple M4 Pro, on the other hand, comes with an up to 14-core CPU with up to 10 performance cores and four efficiency cores, which Apple claims to be up to 1.9x faster than the CPU of M1 Pro, and up to 2.1x faster than the latest AI PC chip.
Its GPU features up to 20 cores for graphics performance, 2x faster that of M4, and up to 2.4x faster than the latest AI PC chip.
The chip supports up to 64GB unified memory and 273GB/s of memory bandwidth (75% increase over M3 Pro and 2x the bandwidth of any AI PC chip). It also supports Thunderbolt 5 on Mac with up to 120Gb/s data transfer speeds.\
Lastly, the most powerful of the bunch, the Apple M4 Max, boasts an up to 16-core CPU, with up to 12 performance cores and four efficiency cores. It is 2.2x faster than the CPU in M1 Max and up to 2.5x faster than the latest AI PC chip. Its GPU has up to 40 cores for performance that is up to 1.9x faster than M1 Max and up to 4x faster than the latest AI PC chip.
The chip supports up to 128GB unified memory and up to 546GB/s of memory bandwidth, which is 4x the bandwidth of the latest AI PC chip.
Inside the M4 Max chip is the enhanced Media Engine with two video encode engines and two ProRes accelerators.
Alongside the M4 Pro, it also supports Thunderbolt 5 with up to 120Gb/s data transfer capability.
The new Apple M4 Pro, M4 Max, and M4 chips are built for Apple Intelligence and available with macOS Sequoia 15.1.
