Inside Look: HONOR’s Smartphone Reliability Testing

Here’s an inside update for you, HONOR has revealed its dedicated reliability lab that simulates real-world scenarios, testing devices under harsh conditions before they reach users.

This reliability lab spans nearly 6,000 square meters and focuses on testing mobile phone hardware under real-world conditions.

Through various experiments, the lab evaluates and improves device durability, environmental resistance, and overall reliability.

This section tests the durability of phone structures, including frame stiffness, button lifespan, and the strength of headphones and USB ports.

Devices undergo millions of button presses, repeated twists to simulate gaming stress, and a sitting pressure test mimics carrying a phone in tight pockets.

Not only that, but water, dust, and corrosion resistance are assessed here. Waterproofing tests range from IPX2 to IPX8 and 5ATM, simulating different exposure levels.

A sand and dust chamber evaluates dust resistance, while a salt spray test checks for corrosion durability.

As some of you might know, HONOR phones are known for their popular drop tests, this is where the devices are dropped from various heights and angles to simulate real-world falls.

HONOR Reliability Test

  • Roller tests (0.5m and 1m) for repeated drops.
  • Directional drop tests (1m, 1.2m, and 1.5m) onto surfaces like granite and sandpaper.
  • Micro-drop tests (10cm–20cm) to simulate minor impacts like dropping a phone on a table.

After undergoing stress tests, phones are checked for functional performance in areas like RF, audio, cameras, display touch, and baseband. Automated systems and AGV robots streamline this process, ensuring efficiency.

This area simulates extreme conditions such as high and low temperatures, humidity, and temperature shocks. Testing helps assess component durability and long-term performance under different environmental stresses.

Covering 800 square meters, this lab investigates the causes of failures in devices, chips, and modules.

Reliability Lab Area

  • Reception Area: Electrical testing of components.
  • Section Analysis Area: Cutting and polishing samples for structural examination.
  • Non-destructive Analysis Area: Using X-rays and ultrasound for internal checks.
  • Material Analysis Area: Microscopic examination with electron microscopes and advanced cutting tools.

Through extensive testing, HONOR ensures its devices meet reliability standards before reaching consumers. How important is durability to you when choosing a smartphone?
