Throughout watching movies since I was a kid, I have never ever been interested in the cars that are seen in the movies, even the cool ones. Cars were a meh, to me and the most important of the movie for me was the plot itself, at least back then anyway. Now that I’ve learned that there is more to take in movies than the plot, certain things become more memorable to me, other than the plot.

Dumb and dumber was one of those childhood movies that were memorable to me, not by the plot, but by a particular reason, that weird “Mutt Cutts mobile” that Lloyd and harry road on. That customized car was quite memorable to me and I’m sure it’s not just me. However, what is that car anyways? Let’s take a closer look on the Mutt Cutts mobile aka the 1984 third generation Ford Econoline.

 History

The Ford Econoline or Ford E-series for short is a full-sized van and truck chassis that originated back at 1961. The lineup produced four generations and is currently still in its fourth generation lineup. The van itself carries a lot of inspiration from Ford’s truck lineup known as the F-series, in which it gets its stern look and design from.

From the 1980’s and sort, the Ford E-series has been the best-selling full-size van and has given way  to further enhancements and improvements throughout the years. The first generation is carried by the Mercury Econoline brand and has ruled the roads of America for about 6 years.

The particular 1984 lineup seen in the movie was part of the third generation of the Ford Econoline that lasted up to the early 90s, which is quite legitimate since the movie itself was launched at 1995.

Movie Relevance

In the movie, the Ford Econoline that Harry and Lloyd rode was customized with each, fur, and whatnot and was also customized to look like a sheep, rather than a dog to be honest. The van serves as the dynamic duo’s company car and is their primary source of transportation throughout the movie, taking them to various misadventures and whatnot, where occasionally they couldn’t go on foot.

The movie, as well as the car, had garnered a pretty decent cult following and has skyrocketed, actor Jim Carrey’s career in various ways. The car itself has become very iconic thanks to its weirdly designed customization, which we would think have helped in the overall popularity of the Ford E-series in the 90s.
