Several online fixers have been arrested for providing non-appearance renewals of motor vehicle registrations following social media terms, prompting the Land Transportation Office to warn fixers about their illegal activity.
As part of an effort to “clean up the bureaucracy” to ensure that citizens’ rights are protected, LTO Officer-in-Charge Romeo Vera Cruz said the department will show no mercy in dealing with “spurious individuals.”
Furthermore, Vera Cruz is also warning against patrons because if they are caught, they may also be held equally responsible as a consequence depending on the law.
As a result of the LTO collaborating with the Quezon City District – Anti-Cybercrime Team (QCD-ACT), Arnel Miranda, 55, and Jefferson Uy, 38, were arrested after being detected by both the LTO and QCD-ACT offering such services.
An individual from the joint task force, pretending to be a customer, contacted Uy via Facebook, claiming to be a customer of that company. Despite this, Uy was not apprehended. Until the transaction was completed and a receipt was provided with the transaction.
Upon Uy identifying Miranda as the person who processed the transaction at the LTO Novaliches District Office in Quezon City, he was arrested behind the transaction.
The QCT-ACT has been enforcing the confinement of both Uy and Miranda under the Ease of Doing Business Act and the Revised Penal Code. This deals with Estafa or swindling crimes within the confinement structure of the QCT-ACT, meaning that both Uy and Miranda are facing the inquest process for the violations of the two laws, respectively.
