Kawasaki’s first two-wheeler to hit the market is a kids’ bike, marking the company’s first roll-out into the market for electric two-wheelers. It was announced during the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, its first ever fully electric bike, the Elektrode. This device is designed to cater for children aged between three and eight years of age.
For children who are making the transition from one-wheel bikes to two-wheel bikes for the very first time, the Kawasaki Elektrode is an excellent choice. As the name suggests, the Elektrode has been designed by Kawasaki to fit perfectly between pedal-powered bikes and small displacement motorbikes. It is possible to ride for up to 2.5 hours on a single charge with the Kawasaki Elektrode, and it features three different power modes. The bike is equipped with a lithium-ion battery pack that provides 5.1Ah of power. For the Elektrode, it is possible to charge it via AC and it only takes less than three hours to do so!
There are three modes of riding supported by the device: Low, Medium, and High. Depending on the mode selected, the possible top speeds are 8km/h, 12km/h, and 20km/h. An Elektrode is powered by a brushless electric motor that is 250W in power. In Japan, Kawasaki claims that the battery depletes to 80% of its original capacity after 500 cycles.
The riding modes are also password-protected as a means of adding an extra layer of security. In addition to becoming an electric bike, the bike can also be used as a pushbike. Despite its low weight, the Elektrode is capable of carrying loads of up to 45kg while weighing just 15kg itself. Plus, the handlebars and the seat can be adjusted.
Kawasaki is set to make a very strong entry into the motorcycle market with the release of Elektrode. The full specs of the Kawasaki’s Elektrode are not available yet but the price is confirmed at $1,099. With the good response received, it might be possible to develop full-sized electric motorbikes or scooters which will soon appear in the market.
