Google has been making changes to Chrome’s Reading mode. Most recently, it added a “Read aloud” button, but it may not be done yet.
Reading mode might add more of the Material soon. You can see that a lot of Google’s apps and services, including Chrome, have adopted it, and everything seems to be coming together nicely.
A browser expert, found out that Google might change the way the Read aloud button looks to fit the theme that Chrome users have. Before, the button was always blue, no matter what color theme you chose.
Now, it changes depending on what color theme you choose. This is a small change, but it makes Reading mode look more like the other Material You changes that Google has been releasing recently.
But the useful zoom controls that have been added to the new overflow menu for Reading mode may be the most important part of this upcoming update. When we first saw this new menu, we were unhappy that the controls for Reading mode were hidden behind another click.
Before, they were right at the top of the interface. But these zoom settings, which didn’t work the first time we saw this menu, can be used as soon as the new submenu is opened. This means we don’t have to go to another level of nesting to zoom in and out.
So far, people have had mixed things to say about Chrome’s Reading mode. Some have criticized it for not being as useful as many reader mode apps for Chrome. Some people think Reading mode is less of a mode and more of a tool because it can only be opened in a side panel and not the whole screen. But it’s good to see that Google is adding more tools to Reading mode to make it easier to use.
