Samsung confirms selling refurbished Galaxy Note 7

What was considered a rumor last month just became an official report: Samsung Galaxy Note 7 to be recycled, refurbished and sold.

After the Galaxy Note 7 started catching fire, Samsung issued a return on the devices. After two recalls, the Korean-giant company decided to cut the life of its latest Note series.

So what happens to the millions of units recalled? Apparently, Samsung has three principles in recycling and processing devices in an environmetally-friendly manner.

  1. devices shall be considered to be used as refurbished phones or rental phones where applicable;
  2. salvageable components shall be detached for reuse;
  3. processes such as metals extraction shall be performed using environmentally friendly methods.

Considering the first principle, only emerging markets such as India and Vietnam can take advantage of the refurbished Note 7.

However, it’s still “dependent upon consultations with regulatory authorities and carriers” as well as local demand. To add, “markets and release dates will be determined accordingly”.

Going back to being eco-friendly, Samsung wants to join EU’s R&D and test to “develop new eco-friendly processing methods”.

A precautionary measure (we think) in case something similar happens again.
