If your periodic maintenance service is affected by the pandemic, then you’re left with the option of doing the basic repair and maintenance of your car or just delaying it, which could affect your car’s running condition over the long run.
On this guide, we will share how it is easy to change the fuel filter of your car specifically for the Toyota Innova 2016 up to 2020 latest model or Innova Crysta MPV with a new 2.8-liter turbo diesel engine in other regions after the oil change.

When is the right time to change the fuel filter of your car?
- Every 10,000 km mileage it is recommended to change the fuel filter
- Note: Engine oil filer is different from the fuel filter
- You can have an engine oil change at cheaper costs in Shell Petrol Service Stations in the Philippines or other shops if you’re avoiding the casa or brand’s repair service
Things needed before changing your fuel filter
- A new fuel filter specifically for the Toyota Innova 2.8 diesel. It will costs around P550 to P1000 depending on the brand. We bought a FleetMax US brand for P580 pesos.
- Pliers and flat screwdriver
- 10mm wrench for the holder of the Fuel Filter system
- Tray for the excess crude or diesel
Step-by-step guide on how to replace Toyota Innova 2.8-liter fuel filter
- Remove the plastic drain cover above the Fuel Pump area for easier access
- Remove vapor pressure sensor and fuel pump sensor connectors as shown in the image
- Remove fuel tube outlet and inlet
- Loosen and remove the bolt that holds the lock to the Fuel Pump Assembly
- Mark with a pen or paint the exact positioning and orientation of the fuel pump cover and cup sub-tank assembly
- Drain the diesel inside the assembly
- Loosen the circular lock clockwise
- Replace the O-ring
- Clean the cup sub-tank assembly with the excess diesel
- Position the new fuel filter
- Fit the cover to the sub-tank assembly with the correct orientation and tighten the circular lock

Fitting back and testing the Fuel Pump with the new fuel filter
- Position back the whole Fuel Pump assembly back to the holder
- Insert back the inward tube for testing (the outward tube has an arrow pointing out)
- Manually pump the whole assembly until you see the diesel going out the outward tube
- Insert back the outward tube and the remaining electrical and sensor connectors
- Double-check that all connectors and tubes are fitted back correctly
- Start the engine to test, if the engine start fails, press the pump a few times again in order to provide more diesel to the engine
It is really easy to change any fuel filter as long as you know how to disconnect and reconnect the different tubes and electrical wires. If you’re not really into mechanical, then I suggest just buying a fuel filter outside and find a car repair shop that could help you.
