Discord Cuts Workforce by 17% in Recent Announcement

Discord, led by CEO Jason Citron, recently announced a significant downsizing move, impacting 17% of its workforce—a response to the broader tech industry trend shifting from pandemic-driven expansion to a more cautious approach.

The layoffs, the largest in Discord’s history, affect 170 employees across various departments, revealing the challenges of managing rapid growth.

Discord’s workforce ballooned fivefold since 2020, leading to inefficiencies and an unsustainable model. Despite Discord’s robust financial position, having raised $1 billion and holding $700 million in cash reserves, achieving profitability remains a goal.

With user growth plateauing, Discord aims to streamline and become more agile. To support affected employees, Discord offers substantial assistance, including five months of salary, benefits continuation, outplacement services, and equity vesting. Citron’s memo underscores the importance of aiding departing staff and recognizes their valuable contributions.
