Despite the growing call from the world over to address gender inequality, it seems like the disease was hardly cured. And rape, trafficking, child marriage, female feticide, honor killings and whole lot offenses taken against women are scarcely pacified. Specifically, India’s treatment to women is horrifying – and all of these affronts against female are credited to their ‘perfect culture’.
A report from BBC by Leslee Udwin released on Tuesday gave me horripilation, a great resentment against all offenders of women’s humanity.
On the report published, Mukesh Singh – one of the six rapists of the 23-year old medical student who died of horrific internal injuries, described the details of the crime to Udwin in an interview.
The girl went out with his male friend one night to watch the movie Life of Pi in Delhi, India and boarded an off-duty bus to get home. The men gang raped the woman and struck her brutishly with an iron tool, after they beat the male friend.
Singh insisted that he was not involved in the rape as he stay in the wheel throughout, this is despite the statement of the prosecutors that all men took turn to drive the bus and all took part in the rape.
Udwin accounted in her report that in the duration of her 16 hours of interviews, Singh did not even show any sign of regret . “I had the long and shocking list of injuries the young woman had sustained, read out to him. I tried, really hard, to search for a glimmer of regret. There was none.” Instead he kept expressing his deliberations about the case, saying:
“A decent girl won’t roam around at nine o’clock at night. A girl is far more responsible for rape than a boy.”
“Housework and housekeeping is for girls, not roaming in discos and bars at night doing wrong things, wearing wrong clothes. About 20% of girls are good.”
He even suggested that people had a right to teach the woman a lesson, and that she should have put up with the rape. The following statements even heightened my rage against this man.
“When being rape, she shouldn’t fight back. She should just be silent and allow the rape. Then they’d have dropped her off after ‘doing her’, and only hit the boy,” he said.
Singh foretells, “The death penalty will just make things even more dangerous for girls. Now when they rape, they won’t leave the girl like we did. They will kill her. Before, they would rape and say, ‘Leave her, she won’t tell anyone.’ Now when they rape, especially the criminal types, they will just kill the girl. Death.”
Udwin was able to speak to two lawyers who had defended the murderers of the 23-year-old student at their trial, and gave equally heinous statements beyond my grasp.
“In our society, we never allow our girls to come out from the house after 6:30 or 7:30 or 8:30 in the evening with any unknown person,” said one of the lawyers, ML Sharma.
“You are talking about man and woman as friends. Sorry, that doesn’t have any place in our society. We have the best culture. In our culture, there is no place for a woman.”
Just imagine a society without women. That would be a society for deranged dogs then.
