Twitter Started Giving Creators A Cut Of Ad Revenue

Twitter said Thursday that it has started giving artists on the site a cut of the money made from ads that are put in replies to their tweets.

The social media company said that the program is part of its attempts to help people make money directly on Twitter. Now, the program is being rolled out to a small group of producers. Later this month, it will be available to more people.

To be qualified, creators must be signed up for Twitter Blue or be Verified Organizations, have at least five million impressions a month over the past three months, and pass a human standards review.

In a tweet, Twitter owner Elon Musk said that the payouts were for a time period that started in February, when he first mentioned the program. Thursday, several creators shared screenshots of amounts they said came from the program. One was for about $37,000 and came from a crypto software engineer with over two million followers.

The move shows how hard social media platforms are fighting for creators. It was announced just a few months after Snap grew its lucrative revenue-share program for creators who make stories, and it comes a week after another Twitter rival joined the fight.

Twitter has had trouble making money for years, and since Musk took over, it has had to deal with even more problems. After Musk took over the platform, many advertisers left because they were worried about how material would be moderated.

Last month, Musk said that most marketers are returning to Twitter. At the end of May, Twitter’s global ad income for the second quarter was about 40% less than the same time last year.
